A wedding photographer's venue guide

The best wedding venues in the Western Cape.

A considered guide to wedding venues across Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington, Somerset West, the Overberg and beyond — built from places I have actually photographed, not a directory copied from the internet.

Before you shortlist

A beautiful venue is the beginning. How the wedding actually works there matters more.

01 · Stellenbosch

Mountain views, vineyards and extraordinary variety.

Stellenbosch has some of the Western Cape's most recognisable wedding estates. What makes it especially useful photographically is the variety: old Cape Dutch buildings, established gardens, open vineyards, water, modern architecture and mountain views can all exist within a relatively small area.

02 · Franschhoek

Big landscapes with a more intimate valley feeling.

Franschhoek weddings often feel slightly more contained than Stellenbosch: mountains wrap around the valley, vineyards sit close to the venues and many estates combine formal architecture with gardens and open country. It is an excellent choice for destination weddings because the whole weekend can happen within one compact area.

03 · Paarl & Wellington

Grand estates, gardens and some of the Cape's best sunsets.

Paarl and Wellington can give you the scale of the Winelands without every venue feeling the same. Some are formal and architectural; others lean into gardens, vineyards and open-air celebrations. The late-afternoon light through this part of the valley can be exceptional.

04 · The Overberg

More space. More character. Less of the expected.

The Overberg is where the Western Cape changes pace. Weddings here can happen in forests, on farms, among rolling hills or close to the coast. For couples who want something less polished than a traditional wine estate — but still want photographs that feel refined — it offers some of the strongest options in the province.

Choosing the venue

Four things I would look at beyond the brochure.

A venue can look extraordinary on Instagram and still make a wedding day unnecessarily complicated. These are the things I notice after photographing hundreds of weddings in the Western Cape.

01

Where does the ceremony face?

Mountain view is lovely, but the direction of the sun matters. A beautiful ceremony space can become difficult if everyone is staring directly into hard afternoon light.

02

How far apart are the important spaces?

Getting ready, ceremony, canapés, portraits and reception should flow. If every part requires a drive or long transfer, that time comes out of the wedding itself.

03

What happens if the weather changes?

Western Cape weather can turn quickly. A strong venue has an indoor or sheltered plan that still feels intentional rather than like a last-minute compromise.

04

Does the venue fit the way you want the day to feel?

The right venue is not automatically the grandest one. An intimate wedding, a black-tie celebration and a relaxed weekend with friends all need different things from the property.

More places I know

More Western Cape wedding venues I've photographed.

This is not a ranking from one to twenty. Different venues suit different weddings. These are additional places where I have photographed real celebrations and would happily work again.

Questions couples ask

Western Cape wedding venue FAQ.

What are the most popular wedding areas in the Western Cape?

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl and Wellington remain major Winelands destinations, while Somerset West, the Overberg, Robertson, Worcester and Swellendam offer very different alternatives within the same province.

Should we choose the venue before the photographer?

Usually yes, because your date and venue are the two things a photographer needs to confirm availability. But if photography is particularly important to you, it can be useful to ask an experienced photographer about a shortlist before signing the venue contract.

Which Western Cape venue is best for photographs?

There is no single answer. Light, ceremony direction, portrait locations, the season and the way the property flows matter more than whether the venue is famous. The best venue is the one that suits both your wedding and the way you want the day to feel.

Do you photograph weddings outside Cape Town and the Winelands?

Yes. I photograph throughout the Western Cape and travel further throughout South Africa and internationally for destination weddings.

Once you've found the place

Choose someone who knows how to photograph the wedding around it.

The venue should be part of the photographs, not the reason you spend the whole day making them. Tell me where you're getting married and what matters most to the two of you.
